Small businesses lose most of their marketing budget on guesswork. They chase every shiny channel, spread themselves thin, and then blame "marketing" when nothing compounds. This roadmap exists to stop that.
Every business has a single highest-leverage channel. A local restaurant almost always wins with local SEO and short-form social first. A B2B services firm usually wins with Google Search and LinkedIn. Pick the one channel where your customers already are and dominate it before touching the next one.
Before paid traffic, make sure the basics exist: a fast, mobile-first website with clear calls to action, Google Business Profile claimed and optimized, and consistent NAP (name, address, phone) data everywhere. Ads amplify whatever is underneath them — a strong foundation, or a leaky bucket.
Weeks 1–4: audit, positioning and foundation fixes. Weeks 5–8: launch your chosen channel with 2–3 content formats and one paid test. Weeks 9–12: double down on what produced, cut what did not, and set up reporting you can read in five minutes.
Resist dashboard overload. For most small businesses there are three numbers that matter: cost per lead, leads per month, and revenue from marketing. If those are moving in the right direction, the tactics beneath them can be imperfect.
